“Part historical fiction, part thriller...A sweeping, satisfyingly scandalous portrait of womanhood in Queen Anne’s Britain”….. Kirkus Reviews... Includes Book Club Questions.
In an era when women could not chart their own futures or even chose their husbands, four women find their lives dominated by the charming, unscrupulous Viscount Brentwood.
Honor Rashleigh, well educated goddaughter of Queen Anne, finds herself forced by family tragedy to live almost as a servant under Brentwood’s roof. Against her will, Mendolyn Turnbull is married off to a lecherous old nobleman for her father’s financial gain, and turns to Brentwood for help. Led by Brentwood into betraying her influential family, Kinna Tremayne faces a horrifying fate. Brentwood’s wife Eloise lives in constant fear of her life at his hands.
From a harrowing escape from the Tower of London to the daring rescue of children whose lives are in jeopardy from their father’s greed, this is a story of courage, resilience, survival and love in a time of political and religious unrest.
The charm and perils of England in the early 1700’s come to life in this absorbing, richly historical romantic thriller.

I greatly enjoyed this novel of historical fiction during Queen Anne's reign in England, and am looking forward to Book 2 in the series. The plot involves four women and their struggle to thrive in a world where they are dependent on the whims of the men in their lives, forcing them to make decisions of survival versus love and family. The story line is compelling; the protagonist is underhanded and without morals, and the women each utilize distinctly different approaches to fit into the world he owns. The author does a wonderful job immersing the reader in the period, with detailed descriptions of the trappings of wealth - furniture, art, clothing, manors - as well as providing sufficient historical background. The societal relationships, all of which depend on class, often show the cruelty of the era and the effects of primogeniture.
If you enjoy period pieces or historical fiction, you will love this book. I heartily endorse this story of courage, resilience, and desperation.

Honor Passage The Legacy Series Book 1 eBook MJ Paul Reviews
I was drawn into this story at page one. The pace was even, with just the right number of twists and turns to keep you intrigued. I love the way the author was able to capture and convey to the reader each character's physical characteristics and personality. The descriptions of the estates, the clothing of the period, dinnerware, etc. added an important dimension to the telling of the story. I am looking forward to the sequel and other works by this talented author.
I loved this book. I want a book to grab me at least by page 2 and that truly happened with Honor's Passage. I was able to visualize each of the characters and what was going on around them--a real movie in my head as I read the book. There was history, suspense, drama, and fun all wrapped up in a wonderful package. The only problem that I found with the book was that it ended. I can't wait for the second book in the series. Hurry please.
Great book. It pulled me in and kept me interested throughout. Can't wait for the sequel.
I am not a huge fan of historical novels, but I was really "taken in" by Honor's Passage. So many details about the characters and locale were written so well that I could "see" what the author was describing. And, there was a lot of action as you read through the book, never knowing for sure what was going to happen next. The only bad thing I can say about it was that when I got to the last page, I was hoping that there was something wrong with my , because I was not ready to put it down ! Can't wait for the sequel !
I enjoyed this book so very much. It was fun to read and well written. The characters, their dress and venues were described beautifully. I felt I really got to know the characters and could easily visualize them. The story has many twists and turns and plenty of good of evil.
I live in the same city as the author and was privileged to have her speak to my book club.
The extent of her research was amazing, I wonder how many authors work this hard to assure the details of the story are plausible. She spent a lot of time (years) to make sure any historical events were accurate and also that the facts and fiction surrounding actions, events, injuries, travel times, modes etc. were actually properly described. She described the customs of the time and court in a manner that enlightened all, even those who are well read and informed on this period of British history and culture. There will be a sequel and I anxiously await more tales of this group of people I have come to know through this gifted storyteller.
Honor’s Passage is a delight to read. M.J. Paul, a gifted story-teller and writer, weaves the historical events during the reign of Queen Anne with a plot of intrigue and suspense that surprises and pleases from the first page to the last.
The colorful cast of characters are diverse and well rounded, some full of warmth, some cunning and ruthless. While the lives of the four main women characters are dictated by social convention and laws of the land, they each find ways to achieve their goals.
The author uses period-correct language and immerses the reader in details of food, clothing, custom and court life. This authentic sense of time and place is exceptional and literally puts the reader in the story.
I loved Honor’s Passage and am anxious for the sequel.
I give Honor’s Passage five stars because both the story and the writing were so engaging. I especially enjoyed the details the author used – enough to make the scene and character come alive, but not too many to become onerous. I care about the characters and want to read on. The family tree helped me so much. I love to read historical fiction and this book provides both enjoyment and a way to learn about the time period. The author’s knowledge of the period is vast and it is used so effectively. By including the term “a brown study” it shows that the author is immersed in the language of the time period. The prose is often poetic “Moonlight spilled through the mullioned window, casting a web of light across the counterpane.” This is a great detail that paints a picture without going overboard. I truly learned so much about life in England at this time and really look forward to know what is going to happen in America. It is written for both the historian and also for someone who just wants a great story. It is a really interesting and well written book.
